Telecommunications giant, Globacom has debunked the rumour making the rounds that the company has dropped Nigerian singing duo, Peter and Paul Okoye of the Psquare fame as its brand ambassadors.
Globacom made this disclosure in a statement in Lagos, on Thursday, where it stressed that Psquare is still with the company as its brand ambassadors.
It would be recalled that few days after their social media war, it was alleged that Globacom dropped them following the way Peter handled an issue that occurred during the grand finale of dance competition, ‘Dance with Peter’.
It was reported that Peter and one of the company’s representatives were involved in an issue that the singer/dancer handled unprofessionally, resulting in their termination as brand ambassadors. The sources also revealed that although the company had failed to fulfill some of its promises, that should not give Peter the right to insult them.
The telecom company disclosed that the annual review of its brand endorsement contracts was only just taking place and so could not have terminated its contract with P-square.
In the statement, Globacom, which over tyears had been the biggest corporate supporter of the entertainment industry, and pioneered the signing of musicians and Nollywood stars as brand ambassadors, confirmed that P-square remains its ambassador.
“We have not disengaged P-square or any of our other ambassadors.
“We are currently in the process of reviewing our contracts with the brand ambassadors,” the statement added.
“Whenever brand ambassadors are to be engaged or disengaged, we usually follow the due process and dignify them by holding constructive discussions with them.
“P-square has been among the company’s flagship brand ambassadors since 2010, and that it has been a mutually rewarding relationship between the two parties.
“We are proud of the role Globacom has played in the rapid upward trajectory of the musical career of these incredibly talented twin brothers.
“Globacom has also played a similar role in the exposure and economic empowerment of all the Nigerian entertainers, and others from neighbouring countries, who worked with us as brand ambassadors.
“Globacom holds its brand ambassadors in the highest esteem and has a dignified procedure of managing its relationships with its brand ambassadors,” the statement added.
The mutual relationship between the Ife and Benin Kingdom was rekindled on Saturday when the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, took Miss Wuraola Otiti Obanor as his new Olori (wife) after the payment of her bride price.
The ceremony which was held at the house of the bride’s father, located at Ewere street, off Powerline, Etete, Benin City, attracted dignitaries from across the country and beyond.
Following the payment of the bride price, Olori Wuraola was presented to the Ife royal family at about 12.40 pm when he was seated on the lap of the father of the Ooni, HRH, Omooba Oluropo Ogunwusi, after seven counts in accordance with Benin tradition.
Commenting on the marriage ceremony, a Benin palace Chief, John Ihama, the Ihama of Benin Kingdom, said: “It is very good marriage we are doing here today. We are giving our daughter out to the Ooni of Ife today. We are very happy. We will take it to royal home from royal homes as well.”
Speaking to journalists shortly after the ceremony, father of the bride, Mr. Williams Obanor, who expressed joy in giving his daughter out in marriage, wished his daughter a happy married life.
“I feel very happy. When you get a good thing in life, you must be grateful to God because this is all the work of God. I never thought it could be so because I never thought that one of these days I will become very close to the Ooni of Ife. Now that it has happened, I feel grateful to God. So, I wish her a happy married life.
“My message for her is that she has to be very polite, obedient, understanding, believing much in God and whatever she needs she will get it. If you have any problem with your husband don’t let a third person to hear of it, go to him and both of you should resolve the problem together amicably, Obanor said.
The elated in-law to the Ife Kingdom sent his daughter away to her matrimonial home with traditional gifts in accordance with Benin tradition.
He said: “We have a lot of gifts for her but in Benin we don’t believe in giving a car or cash. We have what goes by tradition, that is we have the local mortar, broom and the pot. These are some of the things we normally send and at least a box of clothes.”
Among dignitaries present were: HRH. Oba Adebayo Adedini (Asoya Ile-Isoya Ife), Oba Ademola Ademiluyi (Lawarikan of Ife kingdom), John Obayuwana (uncle of the bride), High chief J.A. Awe (Arode of Ife), High Chief Adebowale Olafare (Lowate of Ife), High Chief Olasode Akinropo (Waasin of Ilare, Ife kingdom) and others. The dignitaries later converged on the royal reception ball held in the premises of Edo Hotel, Okada Avenue, GRA, Benin, chaired by Mr. Femi Pedro.
Following wave of agitations for secession and restructuring of Nigeria’s governance architecture which brought mild unrest in some regions, youths have urged individuals, ethnic groups and others behind the moves to eschew violence and limit their demands within confines of law.
They argued that demands could be achieved through dialogue, rather than through violence which often leads to lose of lives and property in the country.
At a gathering organized by a youth based group, NaijaDay Foundation, yesterday in Lagos, with theme ‘Significant of peace and unity in Nigeria’, put in place to commemorate Nigeria’s 57th independent anniversary, the youths also urged government at all levels to keep their quota of responsibilities, so as to ensure adherence of peace and unity among citizens, especially youths.
Addressing congregation at the event, the Director, Prisoners Right Advocacy Initiative (PRAI) and 2017 Mandela-Washington Fellow, Ahmed Adetola-Kazeem, warned agitators to desist from uttering hate speeches while demanding for their rights in the country, just as he caution against overheating polity with various hate moves.
He implored Nigerians not to share every post on social media because a lot of them were written to cause discord amongst Nigerians, stressing that every Nigerian need to be armed with correct information and shun gullibility.
“We all possess innate weapons to fight intolerance and hate, let’s use it. Most of the people sponsoring and leading the clamour for war will jet out of the country if it happens and the common man who has blindly followed them would be made to suffer,” Adetola-Kazeem added.
He emphasized that whenever war occur in a country, the nation would metamorphosed negatively and may not regain its potentials several years after the crisis might have ended.
“The rich will become poor, children became orphans, wives transformed to widows, landlords of palatial homes became refugees who will queue for food. Lawyers, doctors, judges, businessmen, may not be left out. And millions could be sent to their early grave.
“Rather than fighting ourselves we must fight that peace may reign. It is impossible for all of us to agree on the same thing but it is possible for us to be tolerant of one another’s views,”
For Publisher, Checkout Magazine, and a United Kingdom (UK) based journalist, Lekan Fatodu, pocket of violence within the country, which was due to agitations from the regions for secessions, restructuring and others, indicated that it was time to make peace a national mantra.
He said: “It’s high time we made peace a national mantra in Nigeria given the current agitations for secession, devolution of power, resource control, restructuring and other concepts that are clearly threatening the unity, stability and peace of the nation.” Fatodu opined that after making peace the new mantra, the Federal, state and local governments must embark on strategy that would gradually inculcate in every citizen the need to embrace good behaviours and harmonious relationship.
“And the government must adopt the all important strategy of gradually changing opinions, quietly eroding primordial thinking and slowly instilling new ideas that are based on socio-economic and political justice, trust, hope and gains for all Nigerians regardless of tribes, tongues, backgrounds and political affiliations.
“Citizens, through the viable and brilliant platform like NaijaDay, also need to rededicate themselves to the cause of one and better Nigeria and should continually galvanise thoughts and influences that will help in delivering the Nigeria of our dreams,” he added.
To achieve peaceful co-existence in Nigeria, the Director, Center for human rectitude, Yusuf Aweda, appealed that clerics in the country should use religious teachings to ensure protection of humanity, regardless of tribes, religion and ethnicity.
Aweda added that religious leaders should also use alters in protecting lineage and encourage members to marry one another with morality to worship the supreme creator of all.
“Protection of lineage leads to good home, good homes beget adorable communities, good communities make good states. good states make good Nation,” he said.
The director however warned that religion should not be used as a mechanism to promote corruption, steal public funds or frustrate government efforts in eradicating corruption, saying, a nation that has its common wealth not protected could turn a barren nation and may never grow productively to influence the society with great values.

The Federal Government yesterday, disclosed that it has collected Deoxyribonucleic Acid, DNA, profile of arrested Boko Haram insurgents in an attempt to deal with the dissidents.
Meanwhile, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has commissioned first DNA Forensic Centre in West Africa, stressing that the centre would help resolve crimes, paternity and other issues through modern technology.
Equipment in the new Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre at Lagos Island.
Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Abayomi Olonishakin, while addressing congregation at the commissioning ceremony yesterday, which was also attended by Consul General of United States Embassy in Lagos, Mr. John Bray, hinted that the Abuja started a DNA project 2008.
Olonishakin, who was represented by Rear Admiral Lawan Adams, assured that the military would partner Lagos state government to ensure that the facility continuously provides the required service.
He said: “The centre is a major milestone for Nigeria because centres like this are used globally to fight insurgency and other crimes.
“The Defence Headquarters started its DNA centre since 2008. And incidentally, the agency that completed Lagos centre is the one we are partnering,” he added.
In order to ensure that the centre, when completed would have materials to work on, Olonishakin said: “Presently, we have collected samples of all military personnel and high profile insurgents for analysis.”
Earlier, Ambode said that completion and handing over of the centre was a significant milestone and a symbolic manifestation of his administration’s policies in reforming the justice sector and in line with his vision to make the State safe for residents and investors.
The governor added that the DNA Centre was another move by the government to stay ahead of criminals through scientific investigations.
Giving details of the DNA Centre, he noted that the facility has capacity to provide the Police, Prosecutors, Defence Attorneys and Private citizens with crime scene processing; serological screening for blood and semen; DNA analysis of bone, teeth and hair; maternal and paternal relationship DNA analysis; expert witness and case handling services; paternal and maternal ancestry DNA analysis; cold case file review and mass disaster human identification.
Ambode disclosed that the plans have been concluded to embark on second stage of building, that is, development of Toxicology; Trace Evidence and Controlled Substance Analysis; Fingerprint and Latent prints; Firearms, Ballistics and Tool Marks; Digital Forensics; and Questioned Documents Examination.
According to him, development of these other forensic sections at the facility would complement the DNA forensic section and enhance the level of services offered in the country.
He lamented that before development of the centre, most DNA analysis were performed outside Nigeria, a situation that caused longer turn-around times and an overall higher cost of bringing closure to a case.
“I am therefore convinced that the establishment of the Lagos DNA & Forensic Centre will improve the speed and quality of evidence collected to assist our Courts in the quick dispensation of justice. This centre is a definite boost for our administration’s Justice Sector reform programme. It shows that our covenant with Lagosians to create a safe and secure State is being kept,” Ambode added.
In his welcome address, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem said the centre would assist the State to have a reliable DNA database that would enable investigators and law enforcement officers identify crime patterns and suspects, and also help exonerate or convict suspects.
On his part, the Consul General of United States Embassy in Lagos, John Bray, commended the state government for successfully completing the building that would enhance justice and progress.
